Where Wild Hearts and Open Trails Meet

Fading Hoofbeats follows two wild-born mustangs across the American West—real training, real miles, and trust built the honest way, always horse-first. Along the route, we plant native trees to give back to the landscapes that shaped them, leaving a living legacy for mustangs and communities, improving the landscape as we go.

Updates From the Trail

The road is long, the miles are real, and the mustangs are leading the way. Stay tuned for trail updates, field notes, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the ride as it unfolds.

A Horse Herb Garden: A Simple Way to Give Horses More Choice

ByKeeper of the Quiet Miles April 5, 2026April 5, 2026

Note: This post replaces an earlier version of this article, updated with clearer instructions and improved design ideas. Most horses don’t get much say in what goes into their bodies. Does Your Mustang Accept You as Part of the Herd?

By Keeper of the Quiet Miles • March 24, 2026
What It Means to Be Part of the Herd When mustangs accept us as part of the herd, it can show up in ways that are quiet, powerful, and hard to forget. When I wrote Has Your Mustang Ever Tried to Protect You, about Floki trying to save me from a raincoat he was convinced…

Horse Rules: 17 Horse-Centered Rules for Trust and Respect

By Keeper of the Quiet Miles • March 21, 2026
Owning horses should come with a kind of code. These 17 horse rules are the principles I come back to most often: trust over obedience, consent over force, and the kind of relationship that has to be built before it can be reaped.

Has Your Mustang Ever Tried to Protect You?

By Keeper of the Quiet Miles • March 13, 2026
Mustang protective behavior can take unexpected forms. On a rainy morning at the farm, Floki went from fearing my raincoat to trying to get it off me, and I believe he was trying to protect me.

Does Your Horse Notice When Something Changes?

By Keeper of the Quiet Miles • March 10, 2026
Does your horse notice when something changes in you before you do? Earlier this year, I began to suspect mine did. What I saw was not dramatic behavior or obvious refusal, but quieter shifts: a little more hesitation, a little more distance, a little more caution. In this post, I’m sharing what changed, how Floki…

Learning to Listen Instead of Demand

By Keeper of the Quiet Miles • March 1, 2026
I am learning to listen to my horses–in their language. I read something today that stayed with me because it gave words to a truth I have been learning, slowly and sometimes uncomfortably, with my own horses. It was about a horse who came back looking calm on the outside, but absent on the inside….
